Dentistry is stressful. In order to avoid becoming overwhelmed by tension created by patients, treatments, procedures and the business aspects of the profession, we encourage dentists to incorporate a wellness plan into their daily activities. No wellness plan is complete without recognizing the importance of a good night’s sleep. But if you’re under stress, how are you supposed to fall and stay asleep? see more

Empathy is defined as “the psychological identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts or attitudes of another.” For dentists, empathizing with patients is not only good practice. According to the September 2014 issue of the New Zealand Dental Journal, dentists who empathize with their patients enjoy higher rates of case acceptance and patient satisfaction. see more

Big life changes can be positive or negative, expected or unexpected. We often mark our lives by acknowledging big changes: graduations, weddings, housewarmings, deaths, divorces and retirement. However, big life changes can induce a great deal of stress and discomfort, even when we’re the ones initiating them. see more

A professional career is like a lifespan. You start as a novice — dependent on others for education and mentorship — and end as a master — eager to impart your knowledge but ready to move on. Just like a lifespan, a dental career has stages. Success throughout these stages is dependent upon healthy and supportive personal and family relationships, thoughtful financial management and involvement in one’s community. Each life stage requires a different focus, and, with proper attention and planning, each stage can help develop the next. see more

Content: Fifty years ago, the New York State chapter of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) did not even exist. Back in 1968, AGD itself was only a 16 year old teenager. In NYS, quality continuing education for general dentists was hard to obtain other than that provided by dental schools. My, how things have changed! For one, AGD has grown into the second largest dental organization in the United States with over 40,000 members, and NYSAGD has grown from a fledgling group of forefathers meeting in a basement into a vital, prominent organization within the dental community. see more

Many dental professionals are drawn to a career in education. Some of the benefits are obvious: You get to give back to the profession by passing on your knowledge; you gain prestige from your participation in an academic program; and you can depend on a stable (though low!) income. In addition to those, there are other, more unexpected benefits that come with a career in dental education. see more
