You’re a student, about to graduate and become a dental professional. So, the big question is, “How do I get that first dental job?”

Here are the top 10 approaches we’ve found work best:

  1. Try everything. Don’t leave any stone unturned in your dental job search.
  2. Take charge. Throw yourself into your dental job search with gusto!
  3. Be active online. Check out Craigslist to see what dental jobs are available. Connect with as many dental professionals as you can on LinkedIn, and let them know you are looking for a job. Search the national, state and local dental society journal ads online and in print, too.
  4. Market yourself. Send an e-mail introducing yourself to dentists in the neighborhood where you would like to work, and follow up with a phone call a week later, asking for a time to meet. If necessary, show up at the office and ask to speak with the owner. Ask your dental supplier to help you spread the word. Join your local dental society and attend the monthly meetings. Enroll in a dental study group.
  5. Find your strengths. Figure out what distinguishes you from the rest of the dental professionals who are seeking employment, and capitalize on those differences.
  6. Persevere. Somehow, get a foot in the door so you can have a face-to-face meeting with that dental employer who might be looking.
  7. Make first impressions count. Be confident. Dress to impress. Behave professionally.
  8. Remain optimistic. Keep in mind that this is your next challenge, and stay strong in the knowledge that you have navigated difficult challenges successfully in the past. That next great dental job is near.
  9. Realize you’re not alone. Remember that every seasoned dentist you know started out like you – as a recent graduate who was unemployed. Just as they found their way, so will you!
