Think about everything you had to learn in dental school. With all that, how did you miss learning about the art of negotiation?

Doccupations can help you find a job. But you will have to negotiate your salary, hours and benefits package. Your employer is worried about the bottom line. You, on the other hand, need to worry about getting the best compensation for the work you will be doing. So how do the two of you meet in the middle?

Forewarned is forearmed.

  • Do your homework prior to the interview to find out as much as you can about your employer and the compensation package offered.
  • Reach into your network of colleagues to find someone currently working in the organization whose brain you can pick.
  • Do an internet search – most corporate dental offices list their benefits packages, so in those cases, you can familiarize yourself with the offerings prior to the interview.

However, if you’re interviewing with an individual dentist, you most likely will not know the exact terms of your employment prior to your interview. But don’t worry. You can request ample time (1-2 weeks) to consider and respond to a job offer. During this time, you need to have either an attorney or a very experienced mentor or colleague review the contract. (Never sign an employment contract at the time of the interview!)

Don’t be afraid to ask for more money from your prospective employer – the salary quoted to you was probably calculated with negotiation in mind. Speak up for yourself. Remember that you can make up for a lower salary with a nice benefits package. Some things to consider including in a benefits package are:

  1. Malpractice insurance
  2. Disability insurance
  3. Life insurance
  4. Health insurance
  5. 401K plan
  6. Continuing education tuition
  7. Relocation expenses
  8. Sign on bonus
  9. Travel expenses
  10. Uniform reimbursement

To prepare for your negotiation, make yourself a comprehensive (but realistic!) wish list, and then make all of the requests at once. Don’t be disappointed – you won’t get everything you ask for. But you might get something! And it will be more than you would have gotten had you not asked.
